A. In our times, since challah may not be eaten by kohanim because of impurity, it is not given to kohanim but is burned. Only a minimal amount is separated, with no required measure.

Siddur Sefard, Blessings, Separating Challah.2 · Torat Emet 357, Public Domain Read the source

B. The challah that is separated must be burned, and it is forbidden to throw it into the trash or to treat its holiness lightly. Only after she has burned it may it be thrown into the trash, since its mitzvah has already been done and there is no disrespect in this. If it is not possible to burn it, she wraps the challah twice in paper and puts it in the garbage bin.

Siddur Sefard, Blessings, Separating Challah.3 · Torat Emet 357, Public Domain Read the source

C. It is good to wait to separate challah until after the kneading is finished, when the dough has become one mass. If she did not separate it from the dough and baked it, she separates it from the bread after baking.

Siddur Sefard, Blessings, Separating Challah.4 · Torat Emet 357, Public Domain Read the source

D. The obligation to separate challah applies only to dough that is meant for baking. One who makes dough in order to cook it or fry it separates challah from it without a blessing; only if she wants to bake some of it does she separate challah from it with a blessing.

Siddur Sefard, Blessings, Separating Challah.5 · Torat Emet 357, Public Domain Read the source

E. The amount for separating challah with a blessing is when the flour weighs 1560 grams, and as a measure of piety it is good to separate challah without a blessing from about a kilo and a half (Shu”t Chazo”a, p. 518). According to the Chazon Ish, the amount is 2250 grams.

All produce of the ground grown in the Land of Israel and owned by a Jew is subject to terumot and ma’asrot. Any produce of the ground about which it is not known whether terumot and ma’asrot were separated from it is presumed to be demai, and one must separate terumot and ma’asrot from it without a blessing. If it is certain that terumot and ma’asrot were not separated from it, one separates with a blessing, that is, before separating one recites the blessing and afterward says the text of the separation:
